Breathtaking gamefishing in our unexplored bluewaters await discovery

IGFA Rep.(Aziz Agha) for Pakistan with a MarlinOffshore gamefishing is a relatively new sport this part of the globe but the fish are so plentiful that it has become one of the major attractions for tourists. Sportfishing off the sunkissed shores of Karachi, located in the Western Indian Ocean is the ultimate experience which any saltwater angler worth his salt, will never forget.

All the year round, a wide variety of big predatory fish feed close to our shores. As the Arabian sea is quite rough in summer months, most of the saltwater angling is carried out during the winter. The most suitable months for visiting anglers are from mid August and on until mid May. The fish commonly available close to the Karachi shores near the Port Qasim area, Kannup Power House, Cape Montze, Churna Island, Hub Power Plant and Kaio Island area are the Giant Barred Mackerel, Cobia, Barracuda, Shark, Tuna (yellow fin, big-eye, longtail and kawakawa) Mahi Mahi, Amberjack, Giant Trevally, Queenfish, Rainbow Runner, Snapper, Rockcod, Threadfin and Barramundi. Sometimes big Mackerels are so abundant that good 50 pounds plus, have been known to jump right into the fishing boats and that's no fish story.

A little offshore, out beyond Churna Island, around the drop of the Continental Shelf is the home of the majestic tailwalking Billfishes. The hardcore fishermen try their hands with these muscle testing monsters of the deep. Alongwith the marlin, big Yellowfin Tuna, Sailfish, Big sharks, Wahoo, Mahi Mahi and Bonito are all waiting to strike. Some veteren anglers suggest that the world record Black Marlin and also world record Cobia are lurking around somewhere, in our blue waters. We already have recorded the world record Queenfish and more records of other species are on the way.

Trolling with artificial lures is most popular with local anglers. However, if you fancy bottom fishing from a stationary boat, then here too, you will not be disappointed. Our coral reefs and inshore waters are rich with Parrotfish, Bream, Croaker, Grunter and Perch. You can pull in a big fat Grouper or Snapper or even Cuttlefish, if that's your idea of fishing. With a little luck, your reels may keep screaming all day long.

In Karachi, there are no long distance motor drives to the fishing grounds. The fishing boats are available within the city limits. Most of the fishing boats available here have wooden hulls. They ride the big ocean swells with ease and are quite comfortable for the anglers on board. Each fishing boat can be shared by a team of five persons. The lures trolled behind each boat are five and seldom exceed seven in number. Venturing out, fishing from one of our fishing villages is both thrilling and adventerous and can be an experience to cherish and remember.
